The frigate Kauffman has scored big on its final cruise.

The Kauffman crew and its embarked Coast Guard team nabbed 3,900 pounds of cocaine from drug runners on May 16 off the coast of Central America.

They seized the cocaine, valued at $59 million, and detained three crewmembers, according to a Tuesday news release from the ship.

"This was a complex event that required assistance from several agencies in support of Kauffman and her crew in order to see the operation succeed," said Cmdr. Michael Concannon, the Kauffman's skipper.

"My crew and I feel fortunate to have captured such a large cache of drugs and those responsible for its transportation."

It is another success for Operation Martillo, the joint counter-narcotics patrols by U.S. ships and partners off Central America. In March, off the west coast of Central America, the frigate Gary seized 11,500 pounds of cocaine in one of that area's biggest busts in years.

The frigate Kauffman deployed in January and is set to be decommissioned later this year.
