Submarine USS John Warner completes initial sea trials

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Virginia-class attack submarine named after former U.S. Sen. John Warner has successfully completed an initial round of sea trials.

Huntington Ingalls Industries says the USS John Warner submerged for the first time during the trials. The trials tested all of the submarine's systems, components and compartments.

Huntington Ingalls says in a news release that its Newport News Shipbuilding division will deliver the submarine to the Navy following several more rounds of sea trials. The submarine is on scheduled to be delivered in June.

The submarine honors Warner's years of service in the Navy and Marine Corps. Warner served as secretary of the Navy before entering politics in 1978. He retired in 2009 after serving 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
