Reservists' shot at earning the star of a senior chief jumped nearly six percentage points this year.

Master chief quotas for reserve, however, have the same chances.

That's according to the latest quotas for E-8 and E-9 for Reserve and Full-Time Support, whose boards convened Feb. 28. The results are expected in April. The quotas offer 251 spots for 1,823 chiefs seeking E-8 and 42 slots for 424 E-9 hopefuls. Year over year, senior chief has the lowest percentage for selection of the senior enlisted paygrades.

The selection board to pick this year's crop of reserve and full-time support senior and master chief petty officers convened on Feb. 28th in Millington. Results from that board should be available sometime in April, sources tell Navy Times.

Until that release, a look at the quotas released by the chief of naval personnel on March 22, show that the chance to put on the star of a senior chief rose nearly six percentage points this year, with a crop of 251 quotas who'll be picked from 1,823 eligible chief petty officers. It's an opportunity of 13.77 percent, up from last years 7.8 percent when 1,770 were competing for just 138 quotas.

The good news for master chief is the same as the bad news --as  the chance for two enlisted stars is statistical  dead heat compared to last year.  Quotas rose from 38 given last year's board to 42 this  year, but increase of of eligible senior chief's of 424, up from  299 last year tipped the opportunity down slightly to 9,68 percent from last year's 9.77 percent.

In the full-time support ranks, opportunity was ticked up, slightly at both paygrades.

For those competing for FTS E-8, opportunity rebounded this year to 6.54 percent, with 53 of 810 eligibles slated to move up. Last year, only 5.51 percent advanced.

Selection to FTS E-9 saw a third straight year of higher increases in opportunity, with 22 of 116 eligibles and an 198.97 percent chance to get a not for their second star. That's up from 19 quotas 17.43 percent last year and 15 quotas and a 14.71 in 2014.
