Coast Guard icebreaker to set out this week for new project

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard icebreaker Healy will set out from Seattle this week to begin a new research mission in the Arctic Ocean.

The Healy's crew will be looking at the biology, chemistry, geology and physics of the Arctic Ocean and its ecosystems. They will also do sonar mapping of the Extended Continental Shelf.

Coast Guard officials say this is the tenth Extended Continental Shelf cruise for the Healy and the eighth in cooperation with Canadian authorities.

The Healy is the nation's newest and largest high-latitude icebreaker. The cutter is 420 feet long and has extensive scientific capabilities. The cutter has a permanent crew of 87.
