The man convicted of killing two men at a Coast Guard communications station in Kodiak has been ordered to pay nearly $1.5 million to their estates.

James Wells, a civilian expert in radio antennas, was convicted April 25 of killing co-workers Richard Belisle and Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins on April 12, 2012.

He was sentenced July 8 to four consecutive life terms.

U.S. District Judge Ralph Beistline Wednesday ordered Wells to pay $770,470 to Belisle's estate and $713,005 to Hopkins' estate.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports the victims' widows in April sued Wells for wrongful death. Kodiak attorney Jill Wittenbrader is representing Nicola Belisle and Deborah Hopkins.

Wittenbrader says the court has not set a trial in the civil case.
