BELLE CHASSE, La. — Plaquemines Parish prosecutors are accusing a Navy Reserve seaman and his wife of killing their 3 ½-month-old daughter and abusing their other children.

Nola.com/The Times-Picayune reports that the couple was indicted and arrested Wednesday.

The Plaquemines district attorney's office said Xavier Montrex Houston and his wife, Calendria Rochell Houston, both 26, killed their daughter while living on the Naval Air Station-Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse.

Prosecutors say they face two counts of second-degree cruelty to juveniles related to their deceased daughter and her twin sister. Prosecutors also say they face four counts of cruelty to juveniles related to abuse of four other remaining children — 1-year-old twins, a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old.

Prison records showed the couple was in custody in the parish jail.

District Judge Kevin Conner set Calendria Houston's bond at $400,000 and Xavier Houston's bond at $300,000. Their arraignment was set for July 27.

The newspaper said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in New Orleans handled the initial criminal investigation.

Plaquemines prosecutors were not immediately available late Wednesday.
