JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Navy veteran says he's no hero, but a Jacksonville drug store cashier probably disagrees.

Police say 49-year-old Bryan Cooper stopped by for a drink after work on Thursday. While he was talking to the cashier a man walked in and told the cashier to open the cash register.

Cooper told The Florida Times-Union the man said he had a gun. When the cashier had a hard time opening the register, the man reached into his pocket. That's when Cooper turned and knocked the man to the ground.

A police report says Cooper stabbed 27-year-old Carl Jerome Howell with a knife he carries. He held him down until police arrived.

Howell was treated for a cut on his back then taken to jail. It's unclear whether he's hired an attorney.
