NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Federal investigators say they found a dozen safety and health violations at a shipyard in Norfolk.

The Labor Department says it has cited Colonna's Shipyard Inc. The company faces $101,000 in proposed penalties.

Among other things, investigators found during a May inspection that a shipyard worker was 1-foot away from three open manholes that exposed the person to potential falls of up to 30 feet.

The shipyard was also cited for expecting workers to use damaged electrical equipment and unguarded machinery. Other violations included guarding, electrical and fire extinguisher hazards.

The shipyard conducts repairs on Navy ships, tugboats, barges and ferryboats.
