MIAMI — Legal offices on the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have been deemed safe for human occupancy.

The Navy says health experts have completed a preliminary assessment of buildings used by the Office of Military Commissions following allegations that people working there may have been exposed to carcinogens. The finding of no apparent danger was announced Friday.

A complaint lodged with the Pentagon prompted the review. The confidential inspector general complaint said about a half a dozen people who have worked in the buildings in recent years have developed some form of cancer, with a least one death.

The buildings on a former airfield are used mostly by lawyers and support staff involved in proceedings against prisoners facing trial by military commission.
