Now in the Mediterranean, Carrier Bush resumes strikes on ISIS

The George H. W. Bush Carrier Strike Group has resumed airstrikes targeting the Islamic State after a several-month hiatus, according to a Navy release.

The strike group is now in the eastern Mediterranean Sea after leaving the U.S. Central Command area of operations. 

"We are resuming a relentless pursuit of ISIS targets, while reinforcing our commitment to partners and allies in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations," said Rear Adm. Kenneth Whitesell, commander of Carrier Strike Group 2.

The strikes are a part of Operation Inherent Resolve that began in 2014.

The strike group had last conducted strikes for OIR from March 6 to 8. It was deployed for its third tour on January 21.

Prior to entering the Mediterranean Sea on June 5, the carrier strike group had been performing maritime security operations — and other operations to support OIR — in the U.S. 5th Fleet's area of responsibility.
