The Navy this year is setting in motion a sweeping changes to the structure of the training pipeline for enlisted sailors. Here's a breakdown and timeline of what ratings will be affected and when:

THE FIRST FOUR

13,500 sailors — To start the transition, the Navy has officially approved the new training and career paths for four ratings.

COMING SOON

33,000 sailors —For these 15 ratings, Navy officials have already mapped out the new training and career paths and will likely approve the official change soon:

ABE, ABH, AE EN, EPACT, HT, MMA, MR CTM PS, RP, YN  STS, YN(S) SW

THREE YEARS OUT

139,000 sailors — Changes for some in this group of 34 ratings is likely to come by 2020, but some could take until 2023 to complete. Navy officials have not yet determined what the new training and career path will look like for these jobs:

ABF, AD, AM, AME, AO, APACT, AS, ATI, ATO, AZ, PR IS, IT ITS MA, SH, BM, DC, EM, ET, ETR, ETV, FC, FC(A), FT, GM, GSE, GSM, IC, MM, MMW, MN, OS, SPACT

AIRCREW

4,400 sailors — The future of these five aviation warfare aircrew ratings is up in the air because they are overseen by the Chief of Naval Air Training, which has not made any firm decisions about those career paths:

AWO, AWR, AWF, AWS, AWV

JOINT CAREER PATHS

31,300 sailors — These 21 ratings may not be affected by the new training overhaul because their schools are not directly run by the Navy. Instead, these sailors attend training controlled by joint service or other agencies:

CTI, CTN, CTR, CTT ND, EOD, MC, MU, CS, CSS, AG, BU, CM, EO, CE, UT, EA, LN, NC(C), NC(R), AC

FUTURE UNCLEAR

46,000 sailors — The Navy is postponing decisions about the training and career path for these eight ratings that require unique training:

SB, SO, EMN, MMN, ETN, HM, HM(DA), MT
