A sailor from the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush died Monday in a flight deck mishap, officials say.

The accident happened at roughly 4:45 p.m. on Monday and remains under investigation, according to a press release from Naval Air Force Atlantic.

Per Navy policy, the name of the sailor and other details of the apparent accident will not be released until 24 hours after family members have been notified.

According to Naval Safety Center reports, since the fiscal year began on Oct. 1 the Navy has recorded eight other aviation deaths.

The most recent tragedy claimed Naval Helicopter Aircrewman 1st Class Jonathan Richard Clement, who was declared dead on July 31 at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, a day after an auxiliary fuel tank detached from an HH-60H Seahawk helicopter on North Island and struck him and a fellow petty officer.

The other sailor was treated and released from the hospital after suffering what officials at Naval Air Forces described as “minor injuries.”
