The Coast Guard ended the search for an unknown man in Baton Rouge who fell from a downtown casino into the Mississippi River early Saturday.

Officials told Navy Times on Sunday that they failed to locate the man despite deploying crews from a Response Boat – Small II and a MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter to comb more than 30 miles of the river and its banks for nine hours on Saturday.

On Monday, watchstanders in New Orleans told Navy Times that commanders had no other choice because no body was recovered and no other leads appeared.

They don’t even know the man’s name.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department notified the Coast Guard around 7 a.m. Saturday, shortly after multiple witnesses reported seeing a man about 20 years old with short hair and a goatee enter the water.

The Baton Rouge television station WAFB reported that the Baton Rouge Police Department responded to Hollywood Casino on Saturday following reports about the incident.

Officers from the both the Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department joined in the search.

The body of a man washed up next to the USS Kidd museum ship in Baton Rouge on Monday morning, but detectives have yet to confirm to Navy Times that he’s the person who disappeared into the river on Saturday.
