The next in a class of speedy Navy warships is going to be named in honor of Maine’s state capital.

Navy Secretary Richard Spencer said Thursday that Maine has been an important part of the U.S. Navy and Marines through every conflict.

He said that with the naming of the Independence-class littoral combat ship, “Maine is once again proudly ingrained in the annals of American history.”

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King on Thursday thanked Spencer for “recognizing our state’s important contributions to the Navy and to our national security.”

Littoral combat ships were designed to meet new threats after the Cold War.

They can reach speeds topping 60 mph and can travel into shallower water where traditional warships would bottom out.

The future LCS Augusta will be built by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama.
