Weekend movie-goers placed soldiers returning from war slightly ahead of George Clooney but well behind an annual Halloween horror show.

“Thank You for Your Service,” starring Miles Teller and based on the 2013 book of the same name by David Finkel, pulled in an estimated $3.7 million in its opening weekend, making it the second-best new film on the charts and sixth overall, according to multiple media reports. “Jigsaw,” the eighth movie in the “Saw” horror franchise, took top honors with $16.3 million.

“Thank You for Your Service” slightly underperformed on industry estimates, per multiple media outlets, but it was outpaced in the bad news department by the Clooney-directed “Suburbicon,” which hauled in $2.8 million after poor reviews. It‘s the worst opening in Clooney’s directorial career and one of the worst wide-release showings in the Paramount film studio’s history, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Critics and audiences had better things to say about “Thank You for Your Service,” which included multiple military veterans in both on- and off-screen roles. Both RottenTomatoes.com ratings were above 77 percent as of Monday morning.

Box office totals overall were well down from the same weekend last year, with some entertainment sites blaming the World Series and the Netflix release of the second season of “Stranger Things” for keeping some customers out of the theaters.
