Vice Adm. Timothy White assumed command of 10th Fleet/Fleet Cyber Command during a ceremony at Fort Meade in Maryland June 18,.

White takes over for Vice Adm. Michael Gilday who is going on to be the director of operations on the Joint Staff.

Fleet Cyber Command is the Navy’s service cyber component to U.S. Cyber Command.

White was most recently the commander of the Cyber National Mission Force, one of three headquarters elements of U.S. Cyber Command responsible for defending the nation against cyber attacks of significant consequence.

In remarks at the ceremony, Gilday reflected on his time in command.

“These past 23 months have truly been a dream come true,” Gilday said, according to a Navy release. “Only in the U.S. military could a Destroyerman, a Black Shoe, be so fortunate. I have been fascinated with our mission – signals intelligence, satellites, global telecommunications, networks, cyber – but it has been all of you, who work so hard, pouring everything into our mission ... that makes Fleet Cyber truly a special command.”

Gen. Paul Nakasone, the director of the National Security Agency and head of U.S. Cyber Command, presided over the ceremony.

White, during his remarks, reflected on 10th Fleet’s history.

“Tenth Fleet’s success has always been a result of integrating extraordinary intelligence, cryptology and operations,” he said. “The original 10th Fleet was less about protecting convoys from U-Boat attacks and more about going on the offensive and sinking U-Boats. In much the same way, we must and will embrace the notion of distributed lethality and embrace a ‘scene of action commander’ mindset.”
