USS Peleliu returning to San Diego for last time

SAN DIEGO — The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu returns to Naval Base San Diego this week from its final deployment.

A Navy statement says the ship will arrive in port on Dec. 24 after six months in the western Pacific and will be decommissioned in March.

USS Peleliu has been in service for 34 years, made 17 deployments and traveled more than a million miles.

The last Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, it was named for a World War II battle.
