With the help of a nonprofit, two sisters recently donated their parents' unused burial plots for veterans who may need them.
In 2006, Judy Gehrt and Vickie Kordus buried their mother, Edna, and a year later buried their father, Arthur, said Fox 6 Now.
Arthur was a Coast Guard veteran, and had originally bought two plots with his wife in the Veterans Garden of Hope at Forest Home Cemetery. However, as time passed, they rethought their decision, according to Fox.
"They had been lifelong Catholics and they thought they really would prefer to be buried in a Catholic cemetery," Gehrt said.
Originally the sisters were going to sell back the unused plots at Forest Home Cemetery.
But, the cemetery said that they did not buy back, and if we wanted to sell the plots, it would be up to us, Gehrt said.
"We thought, well, maybe we could donate the plots to a veteran in need."
The sisters reached out to the local news station, who contacted the Center for Veterans Issues. One week later it was confirmed that the organization accepted the plots for veterans in need, said Fox.
"We're just so proud of our parents and the life they gave us," Gehrt said. "They were so loving and so kind."
"My sister Vickie and I are pleased to donate these burial plots to the Center for Veterans Issues in honor of our parents."
