Two F/A-18 Hornets scrambled Sunday to intercept two Russian bombers that were flying toward the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, CNN reports.

Navy officials did not immediately confirm details of the incident.

The Hornets were dispatched from the Reagan after the Russian TU-95s were in the vicinity of the carrier, CNN reported, citing two defense officials.

The bombers flew within about 80 miles of the Reagan before the U.S. jets escorted them without incident.

Officials quoted by CNN characterized the run-in as safe and professional.

Sunday’s incident comes as the Japan-based Reagan is joined in 7th Fleet waters by the Nimitz and Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike groups, a rare concurrence that comes as President Trump prepares to travel to South Korea.
