PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Some Rhode Island residents are opposing a proposed fence on U.S. Navy property that could cut through their yards.

WPRI-TV reports the Navy plans to install a fence to surround an approved solar facility in Portsmouth.

Resident Tom Waugh says there was an older fence marking Navy property behind his house, but the new fence would cut through the middle of his backyard.

Another resident, Ralph Sotak, called it a "prison fence" and says his condo association is considering legal action.

Naval Station Newport spokeswoman Lisa Rama says the exact location of the fence has yet to be decided, as the Navy is still awaiting final plans from the contractor.

She says it’s possible the fence will be on the property line.
