While at a recent training course I had a chance to handle a 1911 built by custom 1911 smith Robert Miller. The weapon that I was handed was filthy, caked with dirt and mud, but the rear sight immediately caught my attention. If you look at the images, you will no doubt notice the hooked rear sight. It's my opinion that no form of combat pistol is ready for any sort of "duty," unless you can clear a malfunction using the rear sight to hook against your belt, shoe, or whatever else you can reach. The sloping rear sights no doubt have an attractive look that pleases the eye of some collectors, but collectors aren't the ones clearing malfunctions with wet, cold, or bloody hands.
In a world of 1911s, the overall quality and feel of this one really stood out. If a kicked around dirty, nasty, gritty 1911 can feel this good, it almost makes me want to jump back into the 1911 world, especially after seeing how well this one ran while so filthy. Everything from the installation of the sights, to the edges and installed parts was very, very well done. If I do sell my black polymer heart out and return to the dark side, I'll be giving Robert Miller a call. I really was that impressed with his finished product.
