Sig Sauer Inc., is now in the ammo business. Its Elite Performance Ammunition is the company's first-ever line of centerfire pistol ammunition. They're shipping 5 flavors to start: 90gr .380Auto, 124gr 9mm Luger, 125gr .357SIG, 165gr .40S&W, and 200gr .45Auto.

Sig calls out three features that set its EPA ammo apart from its competition. Its unique secondary hollow point cavity, a carefully located cannelure and a premium, coated brass case.

All five defensive carry rounds feature a proprietary hollow point bullet, the SIG V-Crown Jacketed Hollow Point. It has an additional smaller hollow point cavity behind the main cavity. Sig Sauer says this design, "along with the V-shaped jacket skives, guarantees controlled, uniform expansion at all effective distances and velocities."

The toothed cannelure located halfway up the shank of the bullet more effectively locks the jacket and the lead/alloy core.  Sig says this increases the structural integrity of the jacketed bullet, which helps the bullet retain weight and energy during impact by preventing fragmentation as the bullet mushrooms. This sounds like a mechanical process meant to approximate the features of chemical- or electro-bonding.

Lastly, the brass cases are Techni-crom coated for enhanced lubricity, corrosion resistance, and more reliable feeding and extraction.

We've heard Sig's testing regiment for all of its products is pretty intense, and their ammo line seems to be no exception. Sig Academy instructors have been running the new ammo during classes. If the ammo wasn't performing, or at least if it wasn't cycling reliably, we'd have heard about it from Sig Academy students. They say their instructors and engineers have run tens of thousands of rounds during development and testing of the new ammo.

Sig designed custom loading equipment and a proprietary loading process for the ammo, and is producing the ammo entirely in the US. We'll have more on Sig's new ammo, plus more news about recently released and upcoming products after our visit to their Exeter, NH headquarters next week.
