5 months ago Lt. Col. Nicholas J. Harvey was relieved of command of the Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, known as the “Flying Tigers,” on Nov. 18. The squadron is known as one of the most lethal in Navy aviation history. Marine F-35C pilots hit Houthi positions being used to target military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea area. A handful of Marines’ swimming skills were put to the test recently during incidents that required lifesaving measures. Monday's announcement comes after the Navy announced plans to extend the service lives of 12 destroyers as well. Naval aviator Lt. Serena N. Wileman, 31, and naval flight officer Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay Evans, 31, died after their jet crashed Tuesday. The Oscar Austin, which got underway from Naval Station Norfolk on Monday, is the first of two new destroyers set to arrive in Rota. Marine fighter pilots now have a missile that can strike targets up to 230 miles away, keeping aviators out of the range of many air defense systems. “All personnel are in stable condition,” one U.S. official said.
