NEWPORT, R.I. — Naval Station Newport will join installations across the nation in an annual training exercise to better prepare Navy security forces.

Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2016 will be conducted on naval installations in early February.

Naval Station Newport says it's holding training exercise events on Thursday morning as part of the larger effort.

Officials say they want the public to know that the events are planned and are not in response to an emergency.

All of the station's gates will be briefly closed during the drill and once again the following week.

Navy officials are asking people to avoid visiting the station Thursday morning if possible. The training will impact recreational and retail facilities and all area commands.
