The Navy is investigating the death of a flight surgeon with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, according to a report in the Burlington Free Press.
Lt. Benjamin Frederick was discovered unresponsive Saturday and rushed to the hospital where we was pronounced dead. He was 33. He died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident, according to his obituary posted online, but no further details were given.
Frederick is said to have loved his job as a flight surgeon — that it fit his sense of adventure, the obit reads.
"With an adventurous soul and a drive to serve others, he found a perfect fit in a career as a Naval Flight Surgeon," the obit reads. "Ben lived a full life. Though a carefree, fun-loving, and lively force, he was fiercely devoted in service to his squadron and in loyalty to his friends and family."
Frederick was commissioned in the reserves in 2009 and became active duty in 2013, according to his releasable bio provided by the Navy. He was stationed out of Marine Aircraft Group 31 at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina — it was his first duty station after graduating from the Navy's medical training pipeline.
He is survived by a brother, Christopher, who is also in the Navy, and his parents Mark and Marilyn.
