VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A sailor was fatally shot by a Naval Air Station Oceana security officer in Virginia Beach on Friday.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the incident began with a report of a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Dam Neck and Drakesmile roads just before 10 p.m. on Friday. When Virginia Beach Police officers responded to the scene, they saw damage to Gate 2 at Naval Air Station Oceana and contacted base security.
Navy spokeswoman Jennifer Colaizzi said Naval Air Station Oceana security responded to the request for assistance and encountered an adult male who was later identified as a U.S. sailor.
The security officer fired his gun "for his safety and the safety of personnel in the area," she said.
The sailor was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his life-threatening injuries. The incident is under investigation, Colaizzi said, and the identity of the sailor is being withheld until his next-of-kin is notified.
