The top enlisted sailor on the amphibious transport dock New Orleans was fired March 31 amid a misconduct investigation, according to a statement by Naval Surface Force Pacific.

Command Master Chief Anthony Rivera is under investigation for unspecified wrongdoing. The statement from Naval Surface Force Pacific cited a failure to live up to expectations.

"The commanding officer of the San Diego-based amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans relieved Command Master Chief Anthony Rivera Mar. 31 due to failure to demonstrate the exemplary conduct and leadership expected of those in command leadership positions," said Cmdr. John Perkins, spokesman for SURFPAC.

Perkins declined to provide further details of why Rivera was put under investigation, saying only that it was initiated after an allegation of wrongdoing.

"An investigation was initiated following allegations of misconduct, which led to a loss in confidence in the CMC's ability to perform his duties as command master chief," Perkins said. "It would be inappropriate to discuss the type of conduct with the investigation still open. The Navy expects our leaders to provide principled and highly ethical leadership, stressing discipline, accountability, and the importance of treating shipmates with dignity and respect."

Rivera has served on the carrier Constellation, the destroyer Russell, the cruisers Lake Erie and Cape St. George, and the frigate Rentz.

Rivera is a New Jersey native who came up through the ranks as an engineman.
