ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Google Maps is preparing to launch a 360-degree virtual tour of the U.S. Naval Academy — the first Navy base filmed by Google.

Academy spokesman Cmdr. John Schofield tells the Capital Gazette of Annapolis that the tour will allow people around the world to see the academy. The tour will allow users to navigate select streets and enter some buildings.

Google staff filmed the Yard with hand-held cameras during the summer. Academy officials are reviewing the footage to ensure it doesn't compromise security. Midshipmen's faces will be blurred, features that identify homes of academy officials will be obscured and footage won't show gates or security personnel.

Google has filmed the U.S. Military Academy and the USS Constitution Navy warship.
