LANSING, Mich. — A bill would name a Midland bridge in honor of a 20-year-old U.S. Navy hospital corpsman who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011.

The Midland Daily News reports family of Aaron Ullom testified before a committee last week in support of legislation from Republican state Sen. Jim Stamas of Midland. It would rename the bridge on U.S. 10 over Eastman Avenue as the "Corpsman Aaron D. Ullom Memorial Bridge."

MLive.com reports Debi Ullom says her hope is that people would see her son's name, smile and "be proud of him and his service."

Stamas says Ullom "is an American hero."

Ullom, a 2009 graduate of Midland High School, died while on foot patrol in Helmand province. He was shot while tending to a wounded Marine.
