The Hawaii Department of Health is fining the Navy for discharging untreated or partially treated sewage into state waters. Rear Adm. Wes McCall, the commander of Navy Region Southeast, has also authorized the evacuation of nonessential personnel. The order from the Hawaii Department of Health requires the military to remove fuel from the tanks 30 days after it’s safe to do so. Capt. Albert Lee Hornyak served as the commanding officer since August 2021. The money will go toward covering expenses related to military families' needs after the fuel spill, the cleanup and the draining of the fuel from the underground tanks. “However, our work is not done. We will continue rigorous oversight," says Hawaii Department of Health.
