A bipartisan group of lawmakers want VA leaders to step up outreach efforts to military sexual trauma victims, calling it a critical need. The Women's Initiatives Team is part of an effort to identify and eliminate potential barriers for women across the service. As recently released data from the military services has shown, the participation of women in elite special operations roles remains a rarity. Advocates say more research and emphasis is needed on the particular mental health challenges facing women veterans. Pentagon officials fear such reforms could harm active duty retention. Lawsuits filed against West Point and the Naval Academy seek to end the use of race as a factor in admissions there. Thirty years ago, Congress repealed laws barring women from serving on combatant ships and aircraft, paving the way for a new generation of female leaders. Congressional Democrats and outside advocates say updated policies for the department are long overdue.
