A search is underway in Yosemite National Park for an active duty U.S. Navy ​sailor who went missing last week, according to the U.S. National Park Service.

Alexander Joseph Sevier, 24, traveled alone to Yosemite in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and was last seen on May 3. He arrived on May 1 and was staying at Housekeeping Camp along the Merced River in the Yosemite Valley. Neighbors in the camp told National Park rangers that Sevier went

and would return

​in the evening.

Sevier works at the Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He has black hair, brown eyes, and may have been wearing Aeropostale, Abercrombie or Hollister brand clothing.

The National Park Service is urging any park visitors who were hiking on trails last week and may have spotted Sevier to call 888-653-0009 with any information. Other available information lines are 209-372-0608 or 209-372-0252.

Park rangers, search dogs and a California Highway Patrol helicopter out of Fresno are continuing to search popular trails while concentrating efforts on trails that begin in Yosemite Valley, such as the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail and the Mist Trail.
