HONOLULU (AP) — Navy officials continue to have serious objections to double-lining massive fuel storage tanks to prevent groundwater contamination at their Red Hill Fuel Storage Facility.

Navy Capt. Mike Williamson said Thursday double lining is one remedy but it's not without flaws and more study is needed.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser(http://bit.ly/1z11tbi) reports Williams spoke at a meeting of a task force set up to evaluate effects of a January fuel leak. An estimated 27,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked from one of the 20 World War II-era tanks under Red Hill.

A task force draft report last month recommended double-lining tanks.

Navy officials also report that two new monitoring wells near the storage facility show trace amounts of contaminants.

Navy and Environmental Protection Agency officials say it's premature to form any conclusions.
