The Navy has confirmed an officer assigned to the Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer Jason Dunham has died from injuries sustained during small boat training on July 8.

Ensign Sarah Mitchell, 23, of Feasterville, Pennsylvania, was medically evacuated to a hospital in Aqaba, Jordan, and was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m. local time, Navy officials said in a July 9 press release.

The Jason Dunham departed Norfolk on June 2 and has been operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations since at least early July.

A U.S. Central Command press release reported July 1 that the ship had conducted training operations with with the Egyptian Navy Frigate El Zafer.
