Boom! Boom! Boom! USS Constitution fires cannons to honor CPO selectees!

BOSTON — The USS Constitution has fired a pair of salutes during a guided spin around Boston Harbor to honor sailors selected to become chief petty officers.

The world’s oldest commissioned warship still afloat on Friday fired a 21-gun salute at Castle Island and an additional 17-gun salute as she passed the U.S. Coast Guard Station, the former site of Edmund Hartt Shipyard, where the Constitution was built and launched.

The USS Constitution has sailed in Boston Harbor and fired her guns again to mark Independence Day.

The warship also hosted 140 U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Selects, who came together from commands all around the world for training and mentoring during Chief Heritage Weeks on board the Constitution.

The Constitution was launched in 1797 and earned its nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812. Its current crew members are all active duty sailors.
