Senator to help launch new training for building submarines

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is helping to kick off a new apprenticeship program for people who want to help build submarines.

General Dynamics Electric Boat has facilities in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The submarine manufacturer has said it needs to hire many more employees to help build ballistic-missile and attack submarines.

The apprenticeship program is a collaboration between Electric Boat and the Community College of Rhode Island.

Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, plans to visit the CCRI's campus in Warwick, Rhode Island on Monday to help launch the program.

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training administers the program. Students can get an associate’s degree in management or trade leadership.

Maritime pipe and maritime structural apprenticeship programs will be offered. Graduates earn a certificate from Electric Boat and an associate’s degree.
