The destroyer departed from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, for what the service called a scheduled deployment.
The USS John F. Kennedy was originally expected to be delivered in July of last year, but delays have pushed its slated arrival to March 2027.
The service relieved Capt. Douglas Whimpey of his duties due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command, the Navy announced.
