The cargo ship 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo suffered a fire in its engine room Thursday, forcing it to return to Florida, the Navy said. After decades of corporate consolidation, the pendulum now swings toward consensus that the U.S. defense-industrial base must once again expand. The Navy is performing better than it did last year, but is projected to miss its recruiting goal by roughly 6,700 sailors this fiscal year. Criminal charges against Capt. Dennis Turner were dismissed in July 2023, and a Virginia circuit court allowed expungement of the charges in December 2023. The Navy program that trains dolphins and sea lions for a variety of missions turns 65 this year.
