"The U.S. Navy will lead the design of these ships," the president said Monday, "along with me because I’m a very aesthetic person."
The first hull is expected to hit the water in 2028 as a more nimble companion to the Navy’s larger warships, Navy Secretary John Phelan said.
The aircraft carrier is set to return to Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, and be decommissioned in 2026 after 50 years of service.
The service on Friday salvaged an F/A-18F Super Hornet and MH-60R Seahawk helicopter that crashed in the South China Sea on Oct. 26.
