Militants affiliated with the Islamic State group stormed a prison in eastern Afghanistan and freed nearly 400 of their fighters before security forces restored order, a government official said Monday.
The memorial has a planned cost of about $40 million, and current law requires that 100 percent of funding be raised prior to initial groundbreaking, according to the National Desert Storm Memorial Association.
“At the direction of the Commander in Chief, I have authorized the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force (IRF) of the 82nd Airborne Division to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in response to recent events in Iraq," the defense secretary said.
