ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A man is missing from a fishing vessel in the Bering Sea north of St. Matthew Island but the Coast Guard and a flotilla of fishing boats are searching for him.

“The Coast Guard, the crew of Clipper Epic and others are doing everything we can to find this man,” said Maren Murphy, Coast Guard 17th District command duty officer for the case. “We plan to search through the night.”

In a written update sent to Navy Times on Friday, Coast Guard officials said that the master of the 162-foot fishing vessel Clipper Epic reported his disappearance around 12:40 p.m. on Thursday about 60 miles north of the uninhabited St. Matthew Island.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak C-130 Hercules aircrew from Kotzebue continues to scan the waters alongside the Clipper Epic, Frontier Spirit and Frontier Mariner.

The Coast Guard cutter Douglas Munro has been ordered to join the search.

Searchers report winds at 15 miles per hour, 5-foot seas, 10-mile visibility, an air temperature of 48 degrees with the water two degrees warmer, according to the Coast Guard.

Prine came to Navy Times after stints at the San Diego Union-Tribune and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He served in the Marine Corps and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. His awards include the Joseph Galloway Award for Distinguished Reporting on the military, a first prize from Investigative Reporters & Editors and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
