Big Navy has good news for all the thirsty E-6s out there hoping to get some chiefs’ anchors this fall.

The E-7 quotas released by the Chief of Naval Personnel this week show a slight uptick in the number of slots available for eligible first classes to be promoted next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

There are 18,350 eligible E-6s across all ratings vying for 4,744 chief slots in this advancement cycle, according to Navy figures.

That means an opportunity for 25.85 percent of those looking to make chief, a slight uptick from last year’s advancement cycle rate of 25.22 percent, according to the Navy.

Those percentages have been ticking up in recent years. Back in 2017, just 20.9 percent of eligible E-6s were getting advanced.

This year’s advancement opportunity is above the 10-year average of 22.53 percent, as well as the five-year average of 23.89 percent, according to the Navy.

The rainmakers of the fiscal year 2020 active-duty E-7 selection board convened Monday to determine which eligible E-6s will be tapped for advancement, and the selection results are usually released in early August, according to Navy officials.

Chief-selects will receive their anchors in mid-September after their six-week education and training initiation.
