Wednesday marked an important day in the careers of 691 drilling and full-time support sailors. That’s because these petty officers got the word they’ll pin on anchors this year.

Annually, the reserve E-7 selections set the stage for the initiation season of chiefs. Next month, the active duty list of chief selects will be published.

This year’s combined reserve E-7 panel convened May 21 in Millington, Tennessee and wrapped up on June 7.

The active duty board began on June 27 and is expected to finish by July 19.

In the drilling reserve, the final tally of 475 selectees is 27 more sailors than last year’s crop. But that increase in quotas was countered by 365 more eligible first class petty officers.

So with a total of 2,951 sailors competing, the chance to pin on anchors decreased to 16 percent, down from just over 17 percent last year.

For the smaller reserve full-time support community, 1,036 first class petty officers were vying for 216 slots — a 21 percent advancement rate, down from a three-year high of 26 percent last year.

The active duty list is expected to be published in August. Following the Navy’s recent tradition, all new chief petty officers will be pinned on Sept. 16.
